Lake Van Monster Elephant, Jun 10, 2025 · The story of the “Monster of Lake Van,” which has been the subject of debate and myth in Western Armenia for years, has been revealed after 31 years. Its Turkish name is Van Gölü Canavarı. Digital reproductions of primary sources are available in some cases. According to the legend, the god Vahagn, the vishapakagh ("reaper of vishaps"), would plunge into Lake Van to drag out any vishap that had grown large enough to devour the world. When a massive, gilled monster emerges from the deep and tears through the city, the government scrambles to save its citizens. Some of the most known documented sightings of the creature appeared between 1995 and 1997 but first sighting is documented in 1889 at Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey. Above is a still from the video shot by 26 year old Unal Kozak. Get travel tips and inspiration with insider guides, fascinating stories, video experiences and stunning photos.
